Claude vs ChatGPT for personal finance
Where each is strong, what they can and can't see of your money, and why the better answer may be giving both the same data.
Updated 2026-10-29
Both can read a bank account now. Both can reason about a budget, explain a tax rule, and draft a plan. The differences that matter in practice are smaller than the difference between an assistant that knows your context and one that doesn’t.
Where they differ
- Memory. ChatGPT’s own bank connection stores what it learns in ChatGPT. Claude’s custom connectors (and ChatGPT’s apps) read from a server you choose, so the context can live outside the assistant.
- Tools. Both speak MCP, so both can call Truenote’s tools: the overview, the plan, buckets, the tax projection, filtered transactions. Claude Code adds a terminal, which is handy for scripts and for filing documents without pasting them into a chat.
- Long documents. Claude tends to handle a year of statements or a tax return in one go more gracefully; ChatGPT tends to be quicker at short back-and-forth. Models change; test the one you have.
- Price and plan. Truenote charges nothing per assistant and has no built-in AI, so you use whichever you already pay for, and switch when the better one changes.
What makes either one good
An assistant answering “can we afford this?” needs: current balances; what’s committed before the next payday; the plan’s shares; what’s set aside in buckets; which money is the business’s; what’s owed for taxes. None of that is in a transaction list. Truenote keeps it as structured rows with agent-shaped tools (get_overview, get_plan, plan_vs_actual, list_buckets, get_tax_projection), so the assistant spends its context on reasoning rather than on five thousand rows.
Use both
Connect Claude and ChatGPT to the same Truenote, each with its own grant. Ask one the question you asked the other. You’ll find out which you prefer for which kind of question, and nothing you set up is lost when you decide. Steps: Claude, ChatGPT.
Questions
- Is Claude or ChatGPT better for finances?
- They're close, and it changes every few months. What matters more is what they can see: an assistant that knows your plan, buckets, income sources and businesses answers better than a smarter one that only sees transactions.
- Can I use both on the same data?
- Yes. Truenote holds the accounts and the context once; Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and scripts each connect with their own grant and read the same picture.
