Can I connect my bank accounts to ChatGPT?
Yes, two ways: ChatGPT's own bank connection, which keeps what it learns inside ChatGPT, or a connector like Truenote that holds your accounts and context in one place any AI can read.
Updated 2026-10-29
Yes. Since 2026 ChatGPT can read bank accounts through Plaid on its own, and it can also use apps you add, which is how Truenote connects. The difference is where your money’s story lives afterwards.
ChatGPT’s own connection
Settings → Personal finance (names move around) walks you through Plaid Link. ChatGPT then sees balances and transactions and can answer “what did I spend on restaurants last month”. What it learns stays in ChatGPT’s memory, which means the next assistant you try starts from zero, and the context you explained in chat (“that deposit is 1099 income, set aside 30%”) lives in a conversation, not in a record you can check.
Through Truenote
Truenote holds the same accounts (through Plaid, read-only) next to the context an account can’t tell: the spending plan, savings buckets on one account, goals, each income source and its tax set-aside, which business a charge belongs to, notes, plans and uploaded paystubs. ChatGPT connects to it as an app over MCP:
- Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → developer mode.
- Create app → name it Truenote → paste
https://app.usetruenote.com/mcp→ OAuth. - Truenote’s consent screen: choose what ChatGPT may see (you can hide an account or a business), allow.
Then ask: “How is this month going against the plan?” or “What’s left in the vacation bucket?” The full steps are at Connect ChatGPT.
The same data is there for Claude, Claude Code and your own scripts, so switching assistants, or using two, doesn’t mean starting over. Every call lands in an audit log you can read, and revoking an app takes one click.
Is it safe?
The short version: your bank login never reaches ChatGPT or Truenote (you type it inside Plaid Link); Truenote seals the Plaid token before storing it; nothing can move money; and the agent sees only what its grant allows. The longer version is Is it safe to connect your finances to an AI? and the security page.
Questions
- Can ChatGPT see my bank account?
- Only if you connect one. ChatGPT's personal-finance feature reads accounts through Plaid; a custom app like Truenote gives it the same accounts plus the context you add, under a grant you can revoke.
- Does connecting my bank to ChatGPT let it move money?
- No. Both ChatGPT's own connection and Truenote use Plaid's read-only products. Nothing in Truenote can make a payment or transfer.
- What does Truenote give ChatGPT that Plaid alone doesn't?
- The context: your spending plan, savings buckets, goals, which business a charge belongs to, income sources and tax set-aside, notes and uploaded paystubs, as structured data, plus a receipt for every call.
